Youth Athletic Training in Oxford - Why Parents Choose Extra Sports Coaching
Parents usually contact me when they notice one of three things with their kid:
Scenario 1:
“My child works hard but isn’t getting faster or stronger.”
Scenario 2:
“They’ve plateaued and all the other players seem to be progressing.”
Scenario 3:
“They’re talented but don’t take it seriously enough.”
Working with a sports performance coach in Oxford like me provides structure, progression and accountability.
“Before starting, our son wasn’t very physical on the pitch. He shied away from contact. Now he’s stronger, seems to move better and actually enjoys training.”
- Parent of football athlete
Case Study: From Recurring Ankle Injuries to Faster Sprint Speed and Confident Return to Sport
The Challenge
When Joe first started with me, he was always getting injured. His repeated ankle injuries led to missed training sessions, reduced game time, and he said he just didn’t feel that confident anymore.
Every sprint, change of direction, and hard effort came with hesitation because he was worried about rolling the ankle again.
Like many young athletes aged 12–18, he was trying to train harder to improve performance, but without addressing the underlying issues that kept setting them back.
What We Focused On
Over the next 12 weeks, we didn’t just jump into harder workouts. We built a structured programme around:
Improving ankle strength and range of motion
Developing lower body strength and control
Sprint mechanics (especially involving acceleration work)
Progressive return-to-running and change of direction work
Building confidence through measurable progress
The goal wasn’t just to get back playing — it was to come back stronger and more resilient.
The Result After 12 Weeks
By the end of the programme:
✅ Returned to sport pain free
✅ Improved acceleration times
✅ He felt confident in his own strength again
✅ No recurring ankle flare-ups during the programme
✅ Felt stronger and more prepared for football
The biggest win wasn’t just moving faster — it was seeing Joe trust his body again. Throughout the training/rehab programme, his movement got progressively faster, more aggressive, and more confident.
Key Takeaway for Parents
Teen athletes often don’t need more training — they need the right training.
When young athletes build strength, improve movement quality, and follow a structured progression, they can reduce injury setbacks while becoming stronger, faster, and fitter for their sport.
If your child is struggling with recurring injuries or feels held back physically in their sport, the right approach can make a huge difference in both performance and confidence.

Youth Fitness Programme in Oxford - How My Youth Performance Coaching Works
Step 1 — Assessment
Understand your child’s current strengths and opportunities.
The aim isn’t to highlight weaknesses — it’s to identify opportunities to help your teenager move, perform, and feel better.
Step 2 — Personalised Plan
Every athlete receives an individual approach based on their assessment results, sporting demands, and goals.
My programmes are designed to support the long-term athletic development of your child rather than chasing short-term results.
Step 3 — Progressive Coaching
The training evolves as your teenager develops.
Young athletes change quickly — physically, technically, and mentally. My coaching always adapts with them.
As they become stronger, more coordinated, and more capable, training progresses at the right pace to keep them challenged without overwhelming them.
“Before starting, our son wasn’t very physical on the pitch. He shied away from contact. Now he’s stronger, seems to move better and actually enjoys training.”

Meet Jamie – Youth Athletic Coach in Oxford
I’m Jamie — founder of JJ Strength & Fitness and Youth Athletic Coach based in Oxford, UK.
I help young athletes build strength, speed, coordination, confidence, and resilience — not just to perform better in sport, but to develop skills and habits that stay with them for life.
But beyond coaching, I’m also a dad, a weekend bread baker, a hot sauce enthusiast, and someone who genuinely enjoys learning new languages.
And if your child isn’t naturally the loudest, most confident, or most fearless athlete in the group — I understand that more than most.
Why Youth Coaching Matters to Me
When I was younger, sport wasn’t always easy for me.
I played rugby, but I wasn’t the teenager charging into contact or throwing myself into every challenge.
If anything, I was kinda the opposite.
I was the teenager who felt a bit nervous about contact on the rugby pitch. The one who often held back and avoided really getting stuck in.
Not because I didn’t care — but because confidence, physicality, and belief in myself didn’t come naturally.
Looking back, I realise that what I lacked wasn’t effort.
I lacked physical confidence.
I didn’t yet understand how strength, movement skills, and feeling capable in my own body could completely change the way I approached sport.
That understanding came later — and it changed everything.
From Ski Bum to Strength Coach
When I was 21, I left university and moved to the Swiss Alps to become what can only be described as a full-time ski bum.
For six years, life revolved around skiing hard, partying hard, and avoiding anything that looked remotely like adult responsibility.
It was fun — until it wasn’t.
Eventually, I realised I was drifting towards a future I didn’t want.
I was unhealthy, low on energy, undisciplined, and nowhere near the person I wanted to become.
That’s when I discovered strength training and proper physical preparation.
Training gave me more than fitness.
It gave me confidence.
It taught me resilience, discipline, and what it feels like to trust your body.
And I often think how valuable those lessons would have been if I’d learned them earlier.
That’s a huge part of why I coach young athletes today.
Why I Coach Young Athletes the Way I Do
Youth athletic development isn’t about turning children into professional athletes.
It’s about helping them:
Move better
Build strength safely
Develop speed and coordination
Gain confidence in physical situations
Become more resilient and capable
Enjoy sport more and stay active for life
Some children arrive already confident.
Others are quieter, less physical, or unsure of themselves.
Both deserve coaching that helps them grow.
My goal is to create an environment where young athletes feel supported, challenged, and successful — whether they play rugby, football, hockey, cricket, athletics, or simply want to become more confident and athletic.

Sports Performance Coach in Oxford - FAQ Section
-
Most teenagers can begin structured strength and conditioning once they’re able to follow coaching instructions and train safely. My programmes are always tailored to age, maturity and experience—not simply copied from adult training.
-
No—my coaching complements their existing sport training. I adjust session volume and intensity around matches, practices and recovery.
-
For most teenage athletes, 1–3 sessions per week is enough alongside sport commitments. More isn’t always better - it really depends. I can advise on that.
-
Not at all. Although gym experience helps from a learning curve perspective, many young athletes start training with me with little or no gym background. Building movement quality and confidence comes first.
-
Almost any field, court and endurance sport can benefit—including rugby, football, hockey, athletics, rowing, tennis, netball and more. I adapt my training principles to the demands of the individual athlete and the sport they play.
-
My base gym is located in Kidlington.
But I work with clients from Cowley, Headington, Summertown, Oxford, Bicester, Woodstock and beyond.
